Chapter 15

Diane was convicted.
Child endangerment.
Assault.
Forgery.
Conspiracy.
Attempted custodial interference.
Reproductive assault conspiracy.
Fraud.
When the verdict was read, she gripped the table.
For one second, she looked human.
Then she turned toward me.
“You should thank me,” she hissed. “Without me, you wouldn’t have him.”
The courtroom froze.
I stood with Caleb against my chest.
“No,” I said. “Without you, he would still be loved. But I would not have had to survive a crime to hold him.”
The judge ordered her silent.
At sentencing, I spoke.
“My son is not your prize,” I said. “My body was not your family project. My fear was not evidence. My pain was not discipline.”
Diane looked away.
“You wanted a baby so badly you forgot babies grow into people who deserve truth. You wanted control so badly you put a pregnant woman in a kennel. Today, I ask this court to make sure you never control another child.”
She received a long sentence.
No contact with me.
No contact with Caleb.
No contact through third parties.
When deputies led her away, she screamed Ryan’s name.

He did not look up.
