Chapter 11

The trial began in the fall.
By then, my knees had healed.
My lip had healed.
The place inside me where Daniel stood silent had not.
Evelyn entered court in cream silk.
Martin wore a gray suit.
Robert sat behind the prosecutor.
Henry beside him.
Clara beside Rosa.
Daniel sat alone.
I sat with Lydia.
The prosecutor opened with my recording.
Evelyn’s voice filled the courtroom.
Once Robert signs the revised trust, Daniel gets control, and Emily can be blamed.
Then Martin.
Nobody will believe a daughter-in-law over you.
Jurors watched me.
I did not lower my eyes.
Next came the living room assault.
A cousin had recorded part of it on her phone.
Not to help me.
To gossip.
It helped anyway.
The video showed Evelyn dragging me forward.
Slapping me.
Daniel watching.
The defense attorney tried to say the family was under stress.
The prosecutor asked, “Stress caused her to grab hair?”
No answer.
Robert testified about the medication.
He admitted ignoring signs.
He admitted letting Evelyn dominate the house.
He admitted failing me.
When asked why he changed his mind, he looked at me.
“Because Emily laughed while bleeding, and I realized my family had taught her that help would not come.”
I cried then.
Quietly.
Daniel heard it.
He covered his face.
Evelyn stared straight ahead.

No remorse.
Only rage that the room no longer belonged to her.
