Chapter 3

Evelyn tried to cry.
She was good at it.
Soft shoulders.
Shaking hands.
A wounded expression.
“Robert, she has hated me from the beginning.”
I stared at her.
“You dragged me by my hair.”
“She provoked me.”
Robert looked at Daniel.
“And you watched.”
Daniel flinched.
“Dad, Mom said Emily stole from her.”
“And you believed it?”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I didn’t know what to believe.”
I looked at my husband.
That was the moment something inside me finally broke cleanly.
Not shattered.
Released.
“You knew I didn’t steal,” I said.
He said nothing.
“You knew because yesterday I told you I heard your mother with Martin.”
His eyes closed.
Robert turned.
“You knew about the recording?”
Daniel whispered, “She was making wild accusations.”
“No,” I said. “I was begging you to protect me.”
Evelyn lunged again.
Robert stepped in front of me.
His voice dropped.
“Sit down.”
She froze.
Everyone did.
Robert had spent years letting Evelyn control rooms.
But not this one.
His grandfather, Henry, tapped his cane.
“Robert, call the police.”
Evelyn spun toward him.
“Stay out of this, old man.”
Henry’s eyes sharpened.
“I have stayed out of too much.”
My chest tightened.
The family was cracking.
One truth at a time.
Robert handed my phone back.
“Emily, do you have copies?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s face drained.
“They’re with my sister, my attorney, and a cloud folder Daniel doesn’t know exists.”
Daniel looked at me.
“You went to a lawyer?”
“After your mother slapped me last month.”
The room gasped.
Robert’s face turned gray.
“She hit you before?”
I looked at Daniel.
“He told me not to make drama.”
Robert closed his eyes.
Then opened them.
“Daniel, give me your house key.”
“What?”
“You are not going home with her.”
Evelyn screamed.
“She is his wife!”
May you like
Robert looked at me.
“Not for long, if she has any sense.”
