Amazed

Chapter 17

Healing came strangely.

I moved into a small apartment with big windows.

For weeks, I could not wash dishes without remembering Evelyn’s hand in my hair.

So I bought paper plates.

Lydia said that was allowed.

Clara visited often.

Sometimes we cooked.

Sometimes we sat in silence.

Sometimes we laughed so hard we had to stop because grief got jealous and joined us.

Robert asked permission before calling.

Always.

That mattered.

One afternoon, he brought a box.

Inside were my belongings from Daniel’s house.

Photos.

Books.

A sweater I thought Evelyn had thrown away.

And my grandmother’s necklace.

“She had it in her safe,” he said.

I touched the chain.

“She told me I lost it.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

He hesitated.

“I want you to know something. You were family to me before the trial.”

I looked at him.

“Then why did it take evidence for you to act?”

His face fell.

“I was afraid of being wrong.”

“That fear hurt me.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I will spend whatever time I have left choosing differently.”

I accepted the necklace.

Not absolution.

But possibility.

Daniel sent letters for a year.

I read one.

Only one.

He wrote about therapy.

About growing up under Evelyn.

About cowardice.

About watching the video of the assault and hating himself.

I folded it and put it away.
