Chapter 16

Evelyn received life.
Not for one crime.
For all the crimes finally seen together.
Martin received thirty-five years.
Dr. Price received twenty.
Victor Lane received fifteen.
Daniel received probation, community service, and financial penalties for cooperation and his role in the fraud.
Some people thought he got off too lightly.
Maybe he did.
But he lost his mother’s approval, his marriage, his job, his reputation, and the lie he had lived inside.
The divorce was simple.
I wanted nothing from him except my name cleared and my peace returned.
He signed.
His hand shook.
At the final hearing, he said, “I’m sorry.”
I looked at him.
“I know.”
“Can you ever forgive me?”
“I don’t know.”
He nodded.
“I’ll keep working anyway.”
“That is the first decent thing you’ve said.”
He almost smiled.
Then didn’t.
Clara moved in with Rosa for six months.
They learned each other slowly.
Favorite foods.
Birthdays missed.
Old songs.
New boundaries.
Robert sold the house where Evelyn had ruled every room.
He used part of the money to repay victims.
Part went to Clara.
Part went to a fund Lydia helped me create.
The Believe Her Fund.
It supported women framed by in-laws, spouses, and family money.
Henry became its first donor.
He wrote one note on the check.
For every silence I regret.
I kept that note.
May you like
Not because it fixed anything.
Because it told the truth.
