Police moved me to protective housing that night.
Clara came with me.

Robert hired security.
Daniel gave police everything.
The account led to a man named Victor Lane.
A fixer Martin had used for years.
He was arrested in a motel two towns over with my photo, my address, and a syringe in his bag.
Evelyn heard about it in court the next morning.
Her face did not change.
That was the most frightening thing about her.
She had ordered my disappearance as casually as she ordered dinner.
The jury returned at 3:18 p.m.

Guilty on assault, fraud, elder abuse, identity theft, conspiracy, bigamy, witness intimidation, and attempted murder for hire.

The room blurred.
Clara sobbed into Rosa’s shoulder.
Robert bowed his head.
Henry whispered a prayer.
Daniel stood in the doorway and cried silently.
Evelyn looked at me.
Her eyes were still full of hate.
