Chapter 19

Three years later, Clara got married in Robert’s garden.
Not the old house.
His new one.
Smaller.
Lighter.
Full of open doors.
Rosa walked her down the aisle.
Robert stood beside her and cried.
Both parents.
Different histories.
Same love.
Clara asked me to stand with her.
I did.
Daniel attended quietly.
He sat in the back.
He had changed.
Maybe.
He looked healthier.
Less polished.
More human.
After the ceremony, he approached me.
“Emily.”
“Daniel.”
“You look happy.”
“I am.”
The words surprised me with their truth.
He smiled sadly.
“I’m glad.”
Then he stepped back.
No plea.
No pressure.
No attempt to turn apology into access.
That mattered.
Robert danced with Clara.
Rosa danced with Henry.
I stood near the flowers and felt something loosen.
A family had been shattered.
But not everything broken needed to be restored the same way.
Some pieces became windows.
Later, Clara tossed the bouquet.
It landed in my arms.
Everyone laughed.
I rolled my eyes.
Lydia appeared beside me.
“Statistically suspicious.”
I smiled.
“You rigged it?”
“I am an attorney, not a magician.”
We laughed.
Across the garden, Daniel watched, then turned away.
For the first time, seeing him did not hurt.
May you like
It only reminded me that I had left.
And survived.
