Amazed

Chapter 11

Ryan testified on day three.

He walked to the stand like every step cost him.

The prosecutor asked about Linda.

He admitted she controlled the house.

He admitted he dismissed me.

He admitted he grabbed my throat.

His voice broke there.

“I thought Emily was hurting my mother.”

“Did you ask what happened?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“Because I was trained to believe Mom first.”

The prosecutor let that sit.

Then came the money.

Ryan admitted Victor told him my inheritance was “family liquidity.”

He admitted signing business forms without reading.

He admitted my money paid his company debts.

“Did Emily consent?”

“No.”

“Did she know?”

“No.”

Linda stared at him with pure hatred.

Ryan looked at her.

For the first time, he did not look away.

“You ruined me,” she mouthed.

Ryan whispered, “No, Mom. You taught me how.”

The judge ordered silence.

My chest tightened.

Too late.

But true.

Megan leaned close.

“Does that help?”

I thought about my throat.

My father’s letter.

The missing years.

“A little,” I whispered.

A little is not forgiveness.

But sometimes it is air.
