Amazed

Chapter 5

I went home with Megan.

Not my home.

Hers.

She made tea I did not drink and soup I could barely swallow.

My throat hurt for days.

My pride hurt worse.

Linda was arrested that night.

Victor too.

Ryan was questioned and released, but a protective order barred him from contacting me.

His first message came through his cousin.

Mom is in jail. Please fix this.

I sent it to Nora.

She smiled coldly.

“Excellent. More evidence.”

The financial audit began fast.

Nora froze my remaining inheritance.

There was not much left.

Victor had moved most of it through Ryan’s company.

Some paid debts.

Some disappeared into Linda’s accounts.

Some went to a private clinic.

That last payment made Nora pause.

“Clinic?”

Megan leaned over the paper.

“What clinic?”

Nora read aloud.

“Rosehill Memory Care.”

My heart stopped.

“My father died in a regular hospital.”

Nora looked at me.

“Did anyone else in the family require care?”

“No.”

Then I remembered Linda’s phone call.

After tonight, I’ll make sure she looks violent.

Before the audit.

“What audit?” I whispered.

Nora’s eyes sharpened.

“We find out.”

Detective Harris called that evening.

They had searched Victor’s office.

They found documents in my father’s name.

Medical records.

Guardianship forms.

A note from Linda.

Emily must never learn why her father changed the will.

My breath left me.

My father had changed the will?

May you like

Nora placed a hand over mine.

“Emily, we need to pull the probate file.”
