Chapter 16

Ryan was released after serving his sentence.
Nora informed me, not him.
The no-contact order remained.
He obeyed it.
Maybe he changed.
Maybe consequences taught fear.
I did not need to know.
Linda wrote letters from prison.
I kept none.
Nora kept copies for records.
The first one said I had destroyed her family.
The second said Ryan was weak because of me.
The third said my father would have forgiven her.
That one made me laugh so hard Megan thought I was choking.
“My father would have haunted her toaster,” I said.
Megan raised her glass.
“To Thomas Carter, electrical menace.”
We laughed until we cried.
The elder fraud clinic grew.
Nora joined the board.
Detective Harris trained volunteers.
Megan ran community outreach because she could charm church ladies and threaten bankers in the same breath.
We named it Clear Will Project.
For Dad.
For everyone told they were confused when they were simply inconvenient.
At the opening, I read one line from his letter.
I loved you clearly until the end.
The room stood.
I felt him there.
May you like
Not as a ghost.
As courage I had inherited after all.
