Amazed

Chapter 3

Victor was Ryan’s uncle.

Linda’s younger brother.

He had always hovered near our marriage like a shadow with a smile.

He gave Ryan business advice.

He handled tax papers.

He told me wives should not worry their pretty heads about accounts.

Now he was in our office stealing files.

I called 911.

Linda lunged for my phone.

Ryan caught her arm.

For the first time, he stopped her.

“Mom,” he whispered. “Don’t.”

She looked at him like he had slapped her.

“You choose her?”

He looked at my throat.

Then at the video paused on my screen.

“I choose facts.”

It was not love.

Not yet.

Maybe never again.

But it was a beginning.

Police arrived before Victor could leave.

He claimed he was collecting business documents for Ryan.

Then officers found my father’s trust papers in his bag.

My name.

My signature.

Except I had never signed them.

A transfer authorization moved two hundred thousand dollars from my inheritance into Ryan’s business account.

Another moved fifty thousand to Linda.

My knees weakened.

“My father left me that money.”

Ryan looked sick.

“I thought probate was delayed.”

I stared at him.

“You told me that.”

“I believed Victor.”

I laughed once.

It hurt my throat.

“You believed everyone except me.”

Linda sat on the couch, soaked and silent, while officers watched the videos.

The one where she attacked me.

The one where she plotted to frame me.

The one where Victor stole documents.

Then an officer turned to Ryan.

“Sir, we need to ask about the marks on your wife’s neck.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

I looked away.

May you like

I had wanted him to see the truth.

I had not expected the truth to show me how alone I had been.
