Chapter 8

Ryan came to the first hearing looking shattered.
I wanted to hate him cleanly.
It would have been easier.
But he looked like a man waking up inside a house he helped burn.
His lawyer argued he should be allowed contact because Linda and Victor manipulated him.
Nora showed the judge my throat photos.
Then the video.
Ryan choking me.
The judge denied contact.
Ryan cried.
I did not.
Linda appeared by video from jail.
She wore no makeup.
No pearls.
No power.
Her lawyer claimed the bucket incident was mutual combat.
Nora played the full footage.
Linda’s face hardened as her own voice filled the courtroom.
“She’s almost broken. Ryan still believes me over her.”
The judge watched every second.
Then he revoked bail.
Victor’s hearing revealed more.
He had forged estate documents.
Transferred funds.
Coordinated with Dr. Pierce.
The prosecutor mentioned an investigation into my father’s death.
Linda’s head snapped up.
For the first time, I saw fear.
Real fear.
Ryan saw it too.
After the hearing, through attorneys, he sent one sentence.
I did not know about your father.
I believed that.
Maybe.
But he knew about my pain.
He knew Linda controlled our home.
He knew enough to stop hurting me and did not.
Nora asked if I wanted to respond.
“No,” I said.

My father had waited for me to listen to myself.
I would not betray him again.
