Amazed

Chapter 9

Dr. Pierce was arrested two weeks later.

His clinic records were a graveyard of useful lies.

Elderly patients labeled confused after questioning finances.

Spouses declared unstable during divorces.

Adult children cut out of medical decisions after refusing to sign property transfers.

Linda and Victor were not his only clients.

They were part of a network.

A quiet one.

Polished.

Legal-looking.

Cruel.

My father had been one of their targets because he protected me.

I sat in Detective Harris’s office and listened to the evidence.

Medication warnings ignored.

False cognitive reports.

Forged caregiver notes.

A payment from Linda three days after Dad’s death.

I gripped Megan’s hand so tightly she winced.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

“Don’t you dare apologize.”

Harris said they could not yet prove murder.

But they could prove fraud, medical misconduct, and reckless prescribing.

Then came the old voicemail.

Found on Dad’s cloud backup.

His voice filled the room.

Emily, if this saves, I need you to know I did not change my mind. Linda came today. She said Ryan deserves your inheritance because he has carried you long enough. I told her to leave. If anything happens—

The recording ended.

Megan sobbed.

I sat frozen.

Ryan had not carried me.

May you like

I had carried him.

And Linda had tried to bury the man who saw it.
