Chapter 4

At the hospital, they photographed my throat.
Red finger marks.
Bruising.
Burst blood vessels from choking.
The nurse asked if I felt safe at home.
I looked at Ryan sitting outside the glass door with his head in his hands.
“No,” I said.
The word came out rough.
But it came out.
My sister Megan arrived twenty minutes later.
She saw my neck and burst into tears.
Then rage took over.
“I knew that woman was dangerous.”
“I did too,” I whispered. “I just kept explaining it away.”
Megan took my hand.
“No more.”
A detective named Harris came in with a recorder.
I told him everything.
Linda’s insults.
The money control.
Ryan dismissing me.
Victor handling papers.
My father’s inheritance vanishing behind excuses.
The bucket.
The camera.
Ryan’s hand on my throat.
Each sentence made my marriage sound worse than I had allowed myself to know.
Detective Harris listened without judgment.
That helped.
At midnight, my attorney, Nora Bell, arrived.
Megan had called her.
Nora watched the footage once.
Her face went still.
“This is assault, attempted coercion, fraud, identity theft, and possibly conspiracy.”
“What about Ryan?”
Nora looked through the glass at him.
“That depends on what he knew and what he did.”
“He choked me.”
“Yes,” she said gently. “That part does not depend on anything.”
Ryan asked to see me before I left.
I said no.
He sent a message through the nurse.
I’m sorry. I should have listened.
I stared at it.
Then deleted it.
