Chapter 10

Vanessa’s criminal trial started four months later.
The prosecutor opened with the dinner roll.
Not the videos.
Not the forged papers.
A hungry child holding bread.
That image stayed in the room.
I testified first.
I admitted I slapped Vanessa after seeing her hit Lily.
Her lawyer jumped on it.
“You struck my client.”
“Yes.”
“So you are violent.”
“I was wrong to hit her,” I said. “But my wrong does not make her abuse disappear.”
The jury listened.
Then the prosecutor played the videos.
Lily in the pantry.
Vanessa denying food.
Vanessa coaching tears.
Vanessa telling Mason to stay silent.
Eric testified about Vanessa’s lies during custody.
His voice broke when he described losing two years with Mason.
Mason’s recorded interview was played privately for the jury.
We did not hear it.
I was grateful.
I had heard enough children cry.
Vanessa’s notebook became evidence.
Michael responds to guilt.
Lily fears abandonment.
Mason obeys threats.
The prosecutor read those lines slowly.
Vanessa finally cried.
Not when Lily cried.
Not when Mason cried.
May you like
When her own words exposed her.
That told the jury who she was.
