Amazed

Chapter 15

Years passed.

Vanessa appealed twice and lost twice.

Her name became a warning in family court seminars.

Paul’s testimony helped uncover other forged guardianship attempts.

Nora said bad systems rarely have only one victim.

She was right.

The fund grew.

Eric joined the board.

Grace ran operations because she liked telling people what to do and was annoyingly good at it.

Mason and Lily became siblings by choice.

They corrected anyone who called them step-anything.

“We survived the same bad grown-up,” Mason said once.

Lily nodded.

“That counts.”

At eight, Lily stopped keeping snacks under her pillow.

At nine, she asked for a real dining table.

Round.

“No head seat,” she said.

We bought one.

The first dinner, she placed bread in the center.

Everyone took some.

No one asked permission.

Lily watched carefully.

Then smiled.

Mason raised his roll.

“To bread.”

We laughed.

I cried.

Eric patted my shoulder.

“Man, we cry at carbohydrates now.”

“Yes,” I said.

“And that’s fine.”

It was more than fine.

It was proof.
