Amazed

Chapter 3

I called the police.

Vanessa laughed at first.

Then she realized I was serious.

“Michael, don’t be ridiculous.”

I held Lily against my chest.

“My daughter says you locked her in a pantry.”

“She exaggerates.”

Mason cried harder.

“No, she doesn’t.”

Vanessa pointed at him.

“You ungrateful little boy.”

He flinched.

That told me everything.

The dispatcher stayed on the line while I checked Lily’s arms, wrists, and knees.

There were bruises I had not seen.

Or had not wanted to understand.

Small fingerprints.

Old marks.

A scrape near her elbow.

I felt sick.

I had believed Vanessa when she said Lily was clumsy.

I had believed Vanessa when she said Lily was jealous.

I had believed a grown woman over my own child’s fear.

The police arrived quickly.

Vanessa became soft.

Tearful.

Polished.

“She has always struggled since her mother died,” she told the officer. “I’ve tried so hard.”

I stared at her.

My first wife, Anna, had died three years earlier.

Vanessa used her name like a shield.

The officer looked at Lily.

“What happened, sweetheart?”

Lily hid her face.

Mason stepped forward.

“She locked Lily in the pantry yesterday. And she said Lily couldn’t eat dinner because she spilled juice.”

Vanessa hissed, “Mason.”

The officer heard it.

His expression changed.

“Ma’am, step over here.”

Then Mason looked at me.

“There are videos.”

My heart stopped.

“What videos?”

May you like

He pointed upstairs.

“Mom records Lily crying.”
