Chapter 12

The verdict came after seven hours.

Guilty.

Child abuse.

False imprisonment.

Assault.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Conspiracy.

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

At sentencing, Eric spoke first.

“You stole years from Mason by making fear sound like proof.”

Then I stood.

“My daughter was hungry in a house full of food,” I said. “She was slapped for touching bread. She was locked away so you could film her crying and call it behavior.”

Vanessa looked away.

“You tried to turn two children’s fear into your ladder. You failed because Mason told the truth and Lily survived it.”

My voice broke.

“But surviving is not enough. They deserve peace.”

The judge sentenced Vanessa to prison.

Real time.

No contact with Lily, Mason, Eric, or me.

Paul lost his law license and served time for fraud.

Lily’s trust was secured with Nora and Grace as co-protectors.

Mason remained with Eric.

When I told Lily Vanessa was gone, she asked, “No more pantry?”

“No more pantry.”

“No more hungry?”

“Never.”

She climbed into my lap.

“Mason safe too?”

“Yes.”

She sighed.

“Good.”

Then she fell asleep.

That tiny breath felt bigger than the verdict.
