Chapter 5

Vanessa was arrested that night.
Child abuse.
False imprisonment.
Assault.
Endangerment.
She screamed my name as officers led her out.
“You’ll regret choosing that brat over your family!”
Lily heard.
She buried her face in my neck.
I held her tighter.
Mason stood by the stairs, shaking.
One officer asked if he had another safe parent.
Vanessa had told me his father was dangerous.
But after tonight, every story she told had to be checked.
I called my sister Grace.
She arrived in twenty minutes and took both children into the den with blankets and hot chocolate.
Mason whispered, “Am I in trouble?”
Grace knelt.
“No, sweetheart.”
He started crying then.
Hard.
Like a child who had been waiting months for permission.
The next morning, my attorney, Nora Bell, came to the house.
She watched three videos and closed the tablet.
“This was planned.”
“For Lily’s trust?”
“Possibly. Also for control.”
Nora pulled the marriage paperwork.
My signature appeared on documents I had never signed.
One gave Vanessa authority over household finances after legal marriage.
Another named her proposed co-guardian for Lily.
My blood went cold.
“She forged these?”
Nora nodded.
“And if Mason is telling the truth, she was preparing a case that Lily was unstable.”
I looked toward the den.
May you like
Lily was asleep against Mason’s shoulder.
The boy who could have stayed silent had saved her.
