Chapter 17

When Lily turned twelve, she asked for the whole truth.
Not the little-kid version.
The real one.
We planned it with Dr. Lane.
Mason chose to sit with her.
Eric sat beside him.
Grace sat beside me.
We told them about the fake documents.
The trust.
The plan to send Lily away.
The lies Vanessa told about Eric.
The way Mason’s courage changed everything.
Lily cried.
Mason cried.
Then Lily took his hand.
“You saved me.”
Mason shook his head.
“You popped it open. I only talked.”
“That was enough.”
I thought about the dinner roll.
The slap.
The pantry.
The small boy who refused to stay silent.
“Yes,” I said. “It was enough.”
Lily asked if Vanessa ever loved us.
No one answered quickly.
Finally, I said, “She loved control more.”
Mason nodded.
“That sounds right.”

We gave it to them carefully.
Afterward, they wanted pizza.
So we ordered pizza.
