Amazed

Chapter 19

Vanessa was released when Lily was seventeen.

We knew months ahead.

Safety plans were made.

Orders renewed.

Schools notified.

The fund office secured.

Vanessa violated the order within ten days.

She sent an email to a public fund address.

I always tried to teach Lily strength.

Grace printed it, handed it to Nora, and said, “Return to sender via court.”

Vanessa went back before a judge.

Lily chose to attend remotely.

Mason sat with her.

Vanessa cried.

Said she wanted closure.

Said she had changed.

Said prison made her understand motherhood.

Lily whispered, “She still thinks she gets to be in the story.”

The judge imposed stricter restrictions.

Afterward, Lily asked if I was scared.

“A little.”

“Me too,” Mason said.

Lily nodded.

“But not pantry scared.”

“No,” I said. “Not pantry scared.”

That was the difference.

Fear could visit.

It could not move in.

Vanessa eventually stopped trying.

Maybe consequences taught her.

Maybe we became too hard to reach.

Either way, the doors stayed closed.

The snack drawer stayed open.

And Lily kept growing.
