Chapter 11

Daniel testified against Evelyn as part of the financial case.
He did not want to.
The subpoena helped his courage.
He admitted there was no mortgage.
He admitted my paycheck funded Evelyn.
He admitted he told me we were struggling while hiding my own inheritance, Arthur’s trust notices, and bank records.
The prosecutor asked, “Why?”
Daniel’s voice shook.
“Because Mom said Claire would leave if she knew she had options.”
My heart stopped.
There it was.
The whole cage in one sentence.
Evelyn hissed, “Coward.”
The judge warned her.
Daniel looked at his mother.
For once, he did not look away.
“You taught me to be one.”
That hit the courtroom like thunder.
Evelyn’s mouth opened.
Nothing came.
After court, Daniel tried to apologize.
This time, Nora did not stop him because I did not move away.
“I am sorry,” he said.
“For what?”
He swallowed.
“For letting Mom treat you like you were beneath us.”
“And?”
“For stealing.”
“And?”
His face crumpled.
“For making you believe you had no place to go.”
That one touched the wound.
I nodded once.
“I believe you are sorry.”
Hope flickered in his eyes.
I ended it quickly.
“That does not change anything.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
May you like
Maybe he did.
Maybe that was the beginning of his own punishment.
