Amazed

Chapter 17

Years softened the sharpest edges.

Not erased.

Softened.

Daniel finished restitution.

He sent notice through attorneys, not directly.

Good.

He remarried years later.

I heard from Robert.

I felt nothing sharp.

Only a quiet hope that he had become safer before trying again.

Evelyn moved to assisted living after a stroke.

Patricia asked if I wanted to know.

I said, “Only if it affects legal matters.”

It did not.

I wished Evelyn no harm.

I also wished her no access.

Both can be true.

One day, Patricia asked if she could bring me Evelyn’s apology.

I said no.

“If she needs to say it, she can say it to God.”

Patricia nodded.

“I understand.”

Maybe she did.

Maybe not.

I had stopped managing other people’s understanding.

Mia moved into the guest house after her divorce.

She called it temporary.

Three years later, it was still temporary.

We laughed more than we cried.

Robert came for Sunday dinner.

Jenna married a chef, improving our holiday food dramatically.

The house filled with chosen noise.

Not control.

Not obligation.

May you like

Noise.

Life.
