Chapter 6

The divorce filing went out that afternoon.
So did the financial fraud complaint.
Daniel texted nonstop.
You’re overreacting.
Mom is sick.
We can fix this.
Do not make me your enemy.
That last one went straight to my lawyer.
Robert recommended Nora Patel for the divorce and financial claims.
Nora read the file in silence.
Then she smiled faintly.
“I like Arthur.”
“I did too.”
“He built you a legal fortress.”
“Can it hold?”
“If you stand inside it.”
That was the hard part.
Standing.
For years, I had survived by bending.
Evelyn insulted me.
I smiled.
Daniel dismissed me.
I apologized.
They took money.
I trusted.
Now every instinct told me to soften the blow.
Nora saw it.
“Claire, they will use your kindness as a crowbar.”
Mia nodded.
“Listen to scary lawyer.”
I did.
The forensic review found more.
Daniel had opened two credit cards in my name.
Evelyn had used one for vacations.
Daniel had cashed checks from my grandmother’s small inheritance.
The money I thought went toward medical debt had gone to Evelyn’s designer furniture.
The police upgraded the assault charge after reviewing the video.
Evelyn was arrested two days later.
She called Daniel first.
Then me.
I answered once.
Her voice shook with rage.
“You put me in jail on Christmas week.”
“No,” I said. “You hit the owner of the house you were stealing from.”
She screamed.
I hung up.

Then I cried.
Because freedom can still hurt when it tears roots out.
