Chapter 4

At the hospital, the doctor treated my hand and documented my cheek.
First-degree burn.
Bruising.
Stress response.
Words that made violence sound tidy.
My sister Mia arrived before midnight.
She took one look at me and started crying.
Then she got angry.
Good.
I needed someone angry who was not me.
Daniel called fifteen times.
I did not answer.
Evelyn called from a blocked number.
Mia answered.
“Try me,” she said.
Evelyn hung up.
Robert arrived with copies of everything.
The trust.
Arthur’s letter.
The residence condition.
A financial packet.
My stomach tightened when I saw the last one.
“What is that?”
Robert sat slowly.
“Arthur suspected Daniel and Evelyn were using your income.”
I almost laughed.
“Suspected?”
For five years, my paycheck went into a joint account Daniel controlled.
He called it practical.
Evelyn called it family duty.
I called it marriage because I had not learned to call it theft.
Robert opened the packet.
“Arthur hired a forensic accountant before he died. He did not live long enough to complete the review.”
Mia leaned over the pages.
Her face darkened.
“Claire.”
“What?”
She turned one statement toward me.
Transfers.
Thousands each month.
From my salary.
To Evelyn’s private account.
My hands went cold.
Daniel had told me the mortgage was high.
There was no mortgage.
Arthur had paid off the house years ago.
I whispered, “They stole from me.”
Robert nodded.
“And Arthur knew enough to prepare for it.”
I looked at the bandage on my hand.
May you like
Evelyn had slapped me because she thought I had no power.
Arthur’s envelope had placed power back into my burned palm.
