Amazed

Chapter 19

Evelyn died quietly two years later.

Patricia called me.

I stood in the garden when she said it.

For a moment, I felt nothing.

Then a strange sadness moved through me.

Not grief for Evelyn as she was.

Grief for every person she could have been and refused to become.

The will caused one final storm.

She had left me one dollar and a note.

Patricia asked if I wanted it.

I almost said no.

Then I said yes.

The note was short.

Arthur loved you because you made weakness look noble.

I read it once.

Then I laughed.

Not kindly.

Not cruelly.

Just freely.

Even at the end, Evelyn still thought care was weakness.

I placed the dollar in a frame at the clinic with a small plaque.

Some people never learn. Protect yourself anyway.

Clients loved it.

Mia called it petty healing.

She was right.

Daniel attended Evelyn’s funeral.

I did not.

Patricia did.

Afterward, she came to the house and sat in the garden.

“She never apologized,” she said.

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know that too.”

Patricia took my hand.

For the first time, it did not feel like taking sides.

It felt like two women sitting outside a war that had ended.
