Amazed

Chapter 9

The criminal case moved slowly.

The divorce moved faster.

Daniel wanted spousal support.

Nora laughed for almost ten seconds.

Then she presented evidence of financial abuse.

Credit cards.

Transfers.

Hidden accounts.

False mortgage claims.

Daniel’s request died in the hearing room.

The judge ordered him to repay what he personally transferred and cooperate with discovery.

Evelyn’s accounts were frozen.

That made her angrier than jail.

Money had always been her oxygen.

Without it, she began choking on truth.

Daniel asked for mediation.

I agreed once.

Nora sat beside me.

He looked smaller.

“I loved you,” he said.

I waited.

“I still do.”

“You loved what I provided.”

He flinched.

“That’s not fair.”

“No. Fair would have been telling me Arthur left me the house. Fair would have been stopping your mother. Fair would have been not letting me pay a fake mortgage.”

His eyes filled.

“Mom controlled everything.”

“And you liked the benefits.”

He lowered his head.

That silence was the closest he came to honesty.

I removed a folder from my bag.

Inside was my wedding ring.

I placed it on the table.

“I kept thinking marriage meant enduring humiliation until love returned.”

Daniel reached for the ring.

I pulled my hand back.

“But love does not return to a room where respect was never invited.”

I stood.

The mediation ended.

So did the last soft part of me that wanted him back.
