Chapter 3

Evelyn lunged for the documents.
Robert moved them out of reach.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Claire, don’t do this.”
I looked down at his hand.
“Let go.”
He did not.
Robert’s voice sharpened.
“Daniel.”
Still nothing.
I pulled my arm free and stepped back.
“You watched her hit me.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Mom lost control.”
“She slapped me in front of your entire family.”
“You embarrassed her.”
There it was.
The truth wearing no disguise.
I picked up my phone.
Evelyn laughed.
“Who are you calling? The police? Over a family disagreement?”
“Yes.”
Her smile vanished.
I dialed.
The room erupted.
Relatives begged me to calm down.
Someone said Christmas was not the time.
Someone else said soup burns heal.
Daniel whispered, “You’ll ruin us.”
I looked at him.
“You already did.”
When the police arrived, Evelyn turned fragile.
She said I was emotional.
She said I had slipped.
She said the slap was “a gesture.”
Robert quietly handed over the security footage from the dining room camera.
I had forgotten Arthur installed it after his medication went missing near the end.
The officer watched the clip.
Evelyn slapping me.
Daniel doing nothing.
Me falling.
Soup spilling.
The officer looked at my hand.
“Ma’am, do you want medical attention?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn gasped.
“For a little burn?”
I held her stare.
“For the assault too.”
Daniel went pale.
Robert stood beside me while paramedics wrapped my hand.
“Arthur knew this day might come,” he said.
I looked at the Christmas tree glowing behind Evelyn.
“She lost the house tonight.”
May you like
Robert’s eyes were sad.
“No, Claire. She lost it years ago. Tonight you found out.”
