Amazed

Chapter 13

I rebuilt the house room by room.

Not dramatically.

No grand renovation show.

Just choices.

Yellow curtains in the kitchen.

A smaller dining table.

Locks changed.

Arthur’s study restored.

Evelyn’s portrait removed from the hallway.

I placed Arthur’s watch on the mantel beside his letter.

Some nights, I read it when doubt returned.

Claire, this house is yours because you made it a home.

For years, I thought home was where I behaved well enough to be tolerated.

Arthur knew better.

Robert visited often at first to handle legal matters.

Then for coffee.

Then because he missed Arthur and I understood.

He became family in the way truth makes family.

Daniel entered therapy.

I knew because he told Robert, not me.

Good.

Some growth does not need an audience from the person harmed.

Aunt Patricia came one afternoon with Christmas ornaments Evelyn had hidden.

“They were Arthur’s mother’s,” she said. “They belong here.”

I let her in.

She cried in the foyer.

“I should have defended you.”

“Yes.”

“I will spend a long time regretting that.”

“Yes.”

Then I made tea.

Not forgiveness.

Hospitality.

There is a difference.

She became careful.

That was enough for now.
