Amazed

Chapter 18

On the fifth Christmas after the slap, I hosted dinner for twenty-three people.

Clinic clients who had become friends.

Mia.

Robert.

Patricia.

Neighbors.

Jenna and the chef, thank God.

I stood in the kitchen stirring soup.

For a second, steam rose and memory came with it.

Evelyn’s hand.

The floor.

Daniel’s voice.

Don’t make such a big deal out of it.

My breath caught.

Mia noticed from across the room.

She did not rush.

She simply came beside me and picked up a second spoon.

“Together?”

I smiled.

“Together.”

We carried the soup out.

The dining room glowed.

No one sat at the head of the table.

That was my rule.

Robert read Arthur’s Christmas toast from an old card.

May this house protect the kind and disturb the cruel.

Everyone laughed.

I cried.

Patricia raised her glass.

“To Claire, who made it do both.”

I shook my head, embarrassed.

But I drank.

After dinner, a little girl from one of the families we helped fell asleep on the couch.

Her mother whispered, “She hasn’t slept that deeply in months.”

I looked around the room.

May you like

Arthur’s house had become safe enough for strangers to rest.

That was when I knew I was truly home.
