Chapter 7

Daniel came to the house alone three days after Evelyn’s arrest.
He stood outside the gate with red eyes and no coat.
I watched through the camera.
Mia stood behind me.
“Do not open that door.”
“I won’t.”
Daniel pressed the intercom.
“Claire, please. Just talk to me.”
I answered through the speaker.
“You can talk to Nora.”
“I’m your husband.”
“You stopped being my husband when you told me not to make a big deal out of being slapped.”
He covered his face.
“I was scared of Mom.”
“So was I.”
He looked up.
“That’s different.”
“Yes,” I said. “I married into fear. You were raised by it. But you still chose it over me.”
He began crying.
A year ago, his tears would have pulled me outside.
That day, I stayed behind the locked door.
“Did you know the house was mine?” I asked.
“No.”
“Did you know there was no mortgage?”
Silence.
My chest tightened.
“Daniel.”
His voice dropped.
“Mom said you didn’t need to know.”
There it was.
The shape of my marriage.
Daniel did not invent every cruelty.
But he signed off on all of it.
“Leave,” I said.
“Claire.”
“Leave before I call police.”
He stared at the camera.
Then he walked away.
Mia hugged me from behind.
“You did it.”
I looked at the house.
Arthur’s house.
My house.
“I’m still shaking.”
May you like
“Doors can lock while hands shake.”
That was the first lesson of my new life.
