Chapter 4: The Video Anna Hid

Nobody spoke after Anna’s words echoed through the hospital room.

Your mother-in-law knows about Lily’s allergy.

And she knows exactly how to use it.

I watched the frozen image of my wife on the tablet screen.

Anna.

The woman who used to sing badly while making pancakes.

The woman who danced with Lily in the kitchen every Sunday morning.

The woman who kissed my forehead before every difficult day and told me I worried too much.

She had known.

She had been afraid.

And I had been completely unaware.

Detective Reed pressed play again.

Anna’s recorded face moved.

Her hands were shaking.

“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””

I felt something break inside me.

Because Anna had trusted me.

But she had been forced to leave me a message because she thought she might not survive long enough to tell me herself.

“If Evelyn finds out I made this video, she’ll deny everything,” Anna said.

“She always does. She makes people question themselves.””

I looked at Evelyn.

That was exactly what she had done.

For years.

“She’s already started telling people Daniel isn’t stable,” Anna continued.

“She’s building a story.””

My throat tightened.

A story.

That was what it had been.

Not concern.

Not protection.

A story.

Anna leaned closer to the camera.

“Daniel, listen carefully.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Do not let her take Lily.””

Lily made a small sound.

I looked down.

Her eyes were open.

She had heard.

“Dad…”

I immediately took her hand.

“I’m here.””

“Is Mommy really talking?””

My heart shattered.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Lily stared at the screen.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

Detective Reed quietly stepped back.

Even he understood this moment wasn’t about evidence.

It was about a little girl hearing her mother’s voice again.

Anna continued.

“Evelyn has always believed she deserves control over this family.””

A pause.

“She told me once that mothers are temporary, but family names last forever.””

My stomach turned.

Because I remembered something.

A conversation years earlier.

Before Anna died.

Evelyn had held baby Lily in her arms and whispered something I thought was strange.

“She belongs with us.””

At the time, I assumed she meant family.

Now I wasn’t sure.

The video continued.

“She wants custody.””

Anna wiped her eyes.

“She thinks Daniel will eventually give up because fighting her will be exhausting.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

She just stood there.

Silent.

“Anna,” Michael whispered.

The recording continued.

“I found financial records. I found messages. I found proof that she has been planning this for months.””

Detective Reed paused the video.

“Financial records?””

Michael nodded.

“She had copies.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

Evelyn suddenly spoke.

“You’re all acting like I’m some monster.””

Her voice cracked.

“I lost my daughter.””

Nobody answered.

Because for one moment, I almost felt sympathy.

Almost.

Then I looked at Lily.

My daughter.

The child who had nearly died.

The sympathy disappeared.

Detective Reed looked at Evelyn.

“You lost your daughter. But you decided to destroy mine?””

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand family.””

“No,” he said.

“I understand crimes.””

A nurse entered the room.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“There’s something you need to see.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She held up a small envelope.

“This was found with your daughter’s belongings when she was admitted.””

I frowned.

“Her belongings?””

The nurse nodded.

“Her backpack.””

I took the envelope.

My name was written on the front.

In handwriting I didn’t recognize.

Daniel.

Detective Reed watched carefully.

“Open it.””

I pulled out the paper inside.

Three sentences.

That was all.

But they changed everything.

Because the handwriting wasn’t from Evelyn.

It wasn’t from Michael.

It wasn’t from Anna.

It was from someone who had been sitting beside my daughter all afternoon.

Someone who knew exactly what happened.

The note said:

*Daniel,*

*I’m sorry I helped her. I didn’t know she was going to hurt Lily.*

*But I can tell you where Evelyn hid the rest of the evidence.*

My hands shook.

Detective Reed leaned closer.

“Who wrote it?””

I looked at the signature.

And my blood turned cold.

Because the name at the bottom belonged to the person I least expected.

*Dr. Sarah Whitmore.*

Evelyn’s daughter.

May you like

Anna’s sister-in-law.

And the woman who had treated Lily in the emergency room.
