Chapter 9: The Truth Nobody Wanted

For ten seconds after Evelyn’s call ended, nobody spoke.

The silence felt heavier than any accusation.

Because deep down, a small part of me had heard the fear in her voice.

Not the fake fear she used when she wanted sympathy.

Real fear.

Detective Reed watched me carefully.

“What exactly did she say?””

I looked at the phone in my hand.

“She said Michael wasn’t the one who caused Anna’s accident.””

Sarah’s face changed.

“What?””

“She said he was helping her.””

Detective Reed nodded slowly.

“That matches some of what we already know.””

I looked at him.

“But then she said something else.””

“What?””

I swallowed.

“She said Anna was afraid of me.””

Nobody moved.

Sarah shook her head immediately.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Almost like she was trying to convince herself.

“No, Anna loved you.””

I looked at the laptop screen.

At the image of my wife.

At the woman who had spent her final days hiding the truth from me.

“Then why would Evelyn say that?””

Detective Reed didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened another file.

“Because she wants us distracted.””

The screen showed a series of documents.

Emails.

Reports.

Medical records.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

Mine.

Daniel Whitmore.

“She’s been collecting information about you,” Reed said.

“For what?””

“To build a case.””

I stared.

“What kind of case?””

He clicked another document.

A psychological evaluation.

My name was at the top.

I felt my stomach drop.

“I never had that done.””

Detective Reed nodded.

“I know.””

Sarah leaned closer.

“This is fake.””

“Yes,” Reed said.

“But someone wanted it to look real.””

I looked at the report.

Claims of emotional instability.

Anger issues.

Grief-related behavior.

Everything Evelyn had accused me of over the years.

She hadn’t been spreading rumors.

She had been creating evidence.

“She wanted to take Lily.””

Detective Reed nodded.

“But that wasn’t the only thing.””

He opened another file.

A bank statement.

Then another.

Then another.

The accounts belonged to the Whitmore Foundation.

My eyes narrowed.

“She paid for these?””

“Not directly.””

He pointed at the transactions.

“She used someone else.””

Sarah looked at the screen.

Then her face went pale.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She whispered:

“My brother.””

Michael.

Again.

Detective Reed nodded.

“Michael helped move money through different accounts.””

I felt sick.

“But why would he help her?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Because he was afraid of her.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone is afraid of her.””

Sarah looked at me.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“He was afraid because he knew what she did.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Two officers entered.

Between them was Michael.

His face was broken.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Broken.

Detective Reed stood.

“You’re under arrest.””

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

The pain in his eyes almost made me hate him more.

Almost.

“Because I deserve it.””

Sarah stood.

“Michael…”

He looked at his sister.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t get to say sorry.””

Michael lowered his head.

She walked toward him.

“You watched Anna die.””

His eyes filled.

“I tried to stop it.””

The room froze.

I stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked at me.

“The night Anna died, I was supposed to help my mother scare her.””

My blood ran cold.

“Scare her?””

He nodded.

“She had found the money. She was going to expose everything.””

“So you followed her.””

“Yes.””

“You wore my clothes.””

“Yes.””

“You pretended to be me.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Rage burned through me.

“Why?””

“Because my mother told me if Anna went public, everyone would lose everything.””

“You believed her?””

“I was weak.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought we could frighten her into silence.””

I stepped closer.

“And then?””

Michael looked down.

“Anna fought back.””

The room became silent.

“She told me she had already sent the evidence somewhere safe.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then what happened?””

Michael’s face changed.

Fear.

“She ran.””

“From you?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

He swallowed.

“My mother followed her.””

I felt a chill.

“She drove after Anna.””

Detective Reed watched him carefully.

“What happened at the crash site?””

Michael looked at me.

“I arrived after.””

My heart stopped.

“You weren’t there when she crashed?””

“No.””

“Then why did Lily say she saw you carrying Anna?””

Michael looked destroyed.

“Because I did.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

He wiped his face.

“Anna survived the crash.””

The words hit harder than anything before.

No.

Impossible.

“She was alive?””

“Yes.””

My knees weakened.

“What happened?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“My mother found her first.””

The room went cold.

“She was alive when Evelyn arrived.””

I whispered:

“And then?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“She told me to help her.””

My voice shook.

“Help her do what?””

He looked at me.

And I saw the guilt of two years.

“She told me Anna couldn’t be allowed to talk.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

“No…”

Michael continued.

“I thought she meant hide the evidence. I thought she meant threaten her.””

His voice broke.

“I didn’t understand.””

“What did she do?””

Michael looked toward the window.

“She made sure Anna never reached the hospital.””

The room went silent.

Detective Reed’s expression hardened.

“You’re saying Evelyn killed her.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

I couldn’t move.

The woman who had hugged Lily after Anna’s funeral.

The woman who had cried beside me.

The woman who told everyone she loved my daughter.

She had taken Anna away.

Then tried to take Lily too.

Detective Reed picked up his phone.

“We need to bring Mrs. Whitmore in immediately.””

But before he could call, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Evelyn.

One sentence.

*You still don’t know the whole truth about Anna.*

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

My blood froze.

It was Anna.

Alive.

The night she died.

May you like

And standing beside her…

Was me.
