Chapter 5: The Doctor Who Knew Too Much

The room felt smaller after I read the name.

Dr. Sarah Whitmore.

Evelyn’s daughter.

The woman who had held Lily’s hand while she fought for air.

The woman who had looked me in the eyes and told me, “We’ll do everything we can.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“No.””

The word escaped before I even realized I had spoken.

Detective Reed looked at me.

“You know her?””

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“She’s the one who treated Lily.””

Everyone turned toward the hallway.

The nurse’s face changed.

“Dr. Whitmore?””

Nobody answered.

Because Sarah was no longer there.

The chair where she had been sitting moments earlier was empty.

Detective Reed immediately stepped toward the door.

“When did she leave?””

The nurse looked confused.

“Maybe five minutes ago.””

“Did she say anything?””

The nurse shook her head.

“No. She just looked upset.””

Detective Reed looked at the note again.

“Upset people don’t usually leave evidence behind.””

My heart pounded.

“What does this mean?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he picked up the note carefully.

“Your sister-in-law is telling us she helped Evelyn.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

His face collapsed.

“I knew Sarah was scared.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He swallowed.

“I knew she hated what Evelyn was doing.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know how deep she was.””

I stepped toward him.

“My daughter almost died.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You weren’t there when she couldn’t breathe.””

Michael looked down.

“I know.””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was the one who found Anna’s car.””

The room went silent.

I froze.

“What?””

Michael took a shaky breath.

“The night Anna died… I was the one who called emergency services.””

My mind struggled to process it.

“You told me you weren’t there.””

“I wasn’t supposed to be.””

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked at Evelyn.

“She called me.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You’re lying.””

Michael shook his head.

“No, Mom.””

The word landed heavily.

Mom.

He turned toward her.

“You called me because Anna was upset. You said she was acting irrational.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“When I arrived, Anna was gone.””

“Gone?””

“She had already left.””

Detective Reed stepped forward.

“And Mrs. Whitmore?””

Michael looked at him.

“She was there.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What did she say?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“She said Anna drove away angry.””

“And you believed her?””

“I was twenty minutes too late.””

His voice broke.

“I believed her because I wanted to.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the door opened.

A hospital security officer walked in.

“Detective Reed?””

Reed turned.

“Yes?””

“We found Dr. Whitmore.””

My entire body went rigid.

“Where?””

The officer hesitated.

“In the parking garage.””

Detective Reed’s eyes narrowed.

“Doing what?””

The officer looked at me.

“She was trying to access a restricted storage area.””

My stomach dropped.

“What storage area?””

The officer held up a small key.

“Medical records archive.””

Detective Reed took it.

“Where did she get this?””

The officer shook his head.

“She wouldn’t say.””

Evelyn suddenly spoke.

“She’s my daughter.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She’s scared. She made a mistake.””

Detective Reed stared.

“A mistake?””

Evelyn looked away.

For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not concern.

Not anger.

Fear.

Detective Reed walked toward her.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I need you to understand something.””

She looked at him.

“You’ve spent years making people believe you’re the only person protecting this family.””

A pause.

“But now we have evidence that you were the danger.””

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“You think you know everything.””

“No.””

Detective Reed looked toward the door.

“I think your daughter knows more.””

Twenty minutes later, Sarah was sitting across from us in a private hospital conference room.

She looked nothing like the confident doctor I had seen earlier.

Her hair was messy.

Her hands were shaking.

She looked exhausted.

Detective Reed placed the note on the table.

“Did you write this?””

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes moved toward me.

“Because Lily almost died.””

The anger inside me burned.

“You knew.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

I stood.

“You knew my daughter was in danger?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I knew my mother was planning something.””

“Planning what?””

Sarah looked at the floor.

“I didn’t know she would use peanuts.””

I stared at her.

“Then what did you think she was going to do?””

Sarah wiped her face.

“She wanted Lily removed from your custody.””

My stomach turned.

“Removed?””

“She had been collecting information about you for months.””

Detective Reed nodded.

“That matches what we found.””

Sarah continued.

“She said you were unstable after Anna died. She said Lily needed a stronger family structure.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Her family structure.””

Sarah looked ashamed.

“I helped her.””

The confession sat between us.

“How?””

Sarah’s voice became quieter.

“I gave her medical information.””

My entire body went cold.

“What information?””

“Lily’s allergy history.””

The room exploded.

I slammed my hand against the table.

“You gave her my daughter’s medical records?””

Sarah flinched.

“I thought she wanted them for custody arguments.””

“And you didn’t think to ask why?””

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

I stared at her.

“You were dangerous.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

Detective Reed remained calm.

“Sarah, what else did you give her?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation was worse than any answer.

“What else?””

Sarah whispered:

“Anna’s laptop password.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“Because my mother told me she needed proof that Anna was unstable.””

I stared at her.

“She used your sister’s information against her?””

Sarah nodded.

“And when I realized what she was really doing…”

She looked toward the window.

“It was too late.””

Detective Reed leaned forward.

“Where is the evidence now?””

Sarah’s hands trembled.

“I don’t know.””

“You wrote that you knew where Evelyn hid it.””

Sarah looked at me.

“I know where she kept the original files.””

“Where?””

Her lips parted.

Then she said the one place I never expected.

“Anna’s old bedroom.””

My breath caught.

Because Anna’s bedroom had been locked since the day she died.

And only one person had the key.

Evelyn.

Sarah looked terrified.

“But there’s something else you need to know.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She lowered her voice.

“My mother wasn’t trying to take Lily away because she wanted custody.””

A chill moved through the room.

“Then why?””

May you like

Sarah looked directly at me.

“Because Lily is the only person who knows what really happened the night Anna died.””
