Amazed

Chapter 7: The Room Behind the Locked Door

I had spent two years avoiding Anna’s bedroom.

Not because I couldn’t enter.

Because I could.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Nobody had locked the door after she died. Nobody had told me to keep it closed.

I had done it myself.

Every morning, I walked past it.

Every night, I looked at the golden doorknob at the end of the hallway and remembered the last time I saw Anna standing there.

She was wearing the blue sweater Lily loved.

She was laughing because I had burned dinner.

She was alive.

And now Detective Reed was telling me the room that held the last pieces of her truth had been opened by the woman who may have taken her away from us.

The drive home felt endless.

Sarah sat in the back seat beside Lily’s car seat, even though Lily was still at the hospital with a nurse until we returned.

She insisted on coming.

“I need to see this through,” she said.

I didn’t respond.

I wasn’t ready to forgive her.

Maybe I never would.

Detective Reed drove.

His eyes stayed focused on the road.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“Yeah?””

“There’s something you need to prepare yourself for.””

“What?””

“When people hide evidence for years, they rarely hide only one thing.””

I looked out the window.

“What else could there be?””

He didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

Anything.

When we arrived at my house, the front door was open.

My heart immediately started racing.

I had locked it before leaving for the hospital.

Detective Reed noticed.

“Stay behind me.””

I followed him anyway.

The house looked normal.

Too normal.

The same couch.

The same family photos.

The same hallway where Lily used to run with Anna chasing behind her.

But something felt wrong.

The silence.

The emptiness.

Then I saw it.

The bedroom door.

Open.

Anna’s bedroom.

I stopped.

For a second, I couldn’t move.

Detective Reed glanced back.

“You okay?””

No.

I wasn’t.

But I walked forward.

Inside, nothing looked disturbed.

The bed was made.

The curtains were closed.

Anna’s perfume bottle still sat on the dresser.

Her books were still stacked beside the window.

It looked like she could walk in at any moment.

Sarah entered behind me.

“She loved this room.””

I looked at her.

“You were here?””

She nodded.

“Before.””

“After Anna died?””

Sarah looked away.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“You came here after my wife died?””

“I came to say goodbye.””

“And Evelyn?””

Sarah’s silence answered.

Detective Reed walked toward the closet.

“Where were the files?””

Sarah pointed.

“My mother said Anna hid them somewhere she would never think to look.””

I stared around the room.

“She knew Anna too well.””

Sarah nodded.

“She knew her daughter.””

A bitter feeling moved through me.

“She knew how to hurt her too.””

Detective Reed searched the closet shelves.

Nothing.

He checked the drawers.

Nothing.

Then Sarah walked toward the old wooden nightstand beside the bed.

“She always kept a journal here.””

I froze.

“Anna had a journal?””

Sarah nodded.

“She stopped writing in it before she died.””

“Why?””

Sarah touched the drawer.

“Because she thought someone was reading it.””

My stomach dropped.

Detective Reed opened the drawer.

Empty.

But something was wrong.

He ran his fingers along the inside.

“Wait.””

He pulled the drawer out completely.

Behind it was a thin compartment.

Inside was a small USB drive.

My breath caught.

Detective Reed picked it up carefully.

“This is probably what Evelyn came for.””

Sarah whispered:

“Or what she couldn’t find.””

We took the drive to the dining table.

Detective Reed connected it to his laptop.

A single folder appeared.

The name made my hands shake.

*FOR DANIEL.*

I stared at it.

Anna had made this for me.

Before she died.

Detective Reed opened it.

Inside were dozens of files.

Financial documents.

Photos.

Messages.

Audio recordings.

And one video.

Recorded the night before Anna died.

I couldn’t press play.

I couldn’t.

Detective Reed looked at me.

“You don’t have to watch it alone.””

I nodded.

“Play it.””

Anna appeared on screen.

She looked tired.

Not the exhausted kind.

The kind where someone has been carrying fear for too long.

“Daniel,” she said.

I closed my eyes.

Hearing her voice again hurt worse than I expected.

“If you’re seeing this, I’m sorry.””

She looked down.

“I tried to handle this without hurting you.””

My hands trembled.

“I found out Mom wasn’t just stealing money from the foundation.””

Detective Reed leaned closer.

Anna continued.

“She was using the foundation accounts to pay people.””

My stomach tightened.

“People who helped her.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

Anna looked directly at the camera.

“One of those people was Michael.””

I turned.

Michael’s name.

Again.

The person I had trusted.

The person who had cried in the hospital.

The person who claimed he was afraid.

Anna continued.

“He doesn’t know everything. I don’t think he understands what Mom is capable of.””

A wave of confusion hit me.

Then why did Lily see him?

Why did Lily say he helped move Anna?

The video continued.

“Mom found out Lily saw something.””

I stopped breathing.

“She knows Lily remembers.””

Detective Reed looked at me.

Anna’s voice became quieter.

“She told me she would make sure Lily forgot.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then another file opened automatically.

A recording.

No video.

Just audio.

At first, there was static.

Then Evelyn’s voice.

My blood turned cold.

“Children forget.””

A second voice answered.

Michael.

“What if she doesn’t?””

Evelyn replied:

“Then we give her a reason to.””

I stood up so quickly the chair fell backward.

No.

No.

No.

Detective Reed grabbed the laptop.

“Listen.””

But I couldn’t.

Because I had heard enough.

The woman who nearly killed my daughter had been planning this for years.

Then a new sound came through the recording.

A child crying.

A little girl.

Lily.

My heart shattered.

The recording continued.

Evelyn’s voice became soft.

Almost gentle.

“Sweetheart, nobody will believe you.””

A pause.

Then Lily’s tiny voice.

“Daddy will.””

Evelyn answered:

“Your daddy won’t be your daddy forever.””

I felt sick.

Detective Reed stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

Then Sarah whispered:

“She threatened Lily.””

I looked at the laptop.

At the files.

At the proof.

For the first time in two years, I knew exactly what happened.

But one question remained.

If Evelyn and Michael were involved…

Why had Michael brought us here?

Why had he exposed her?

And then Detective Reed found the last file.

The one Evelyn had been trying to erase.

A video recorded by Anna.

The timestamp was from the night she died.

Detective Reed opened it.

And Anna’s face appeared again.

But this time…

She wasn’t alone.

Someone was standing behind her.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected.

Anna looked terrified.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel, if anything happens to me, it was not Evelyn who followed me.””

The person behind her stepped into view.

May you like

And my entire world collapsed.

Because it was me.
