Amazed

Chapter 11

Maya testified next.

She shook so badly the judge offered a break.

She refused.

“I waited too long already,” she said.

She told the jury about Lila disappearing.

About Eleanor saying Lila stole jewelry.

About Harold warning everyone not to ask questions.

About hearing noises beneath the condo during family gatherings.

“I asked Adrian once,” Maya said. “He told me old buildings make sounds.”

The prosecutor asked, “Why did you finally speak?”

Maya looked at me.

“Because Claire called 911 while bleeding. I realized I had been waiting for someone braver to start.”

Lila testified behind a screen.

Her voice was quiet.

But every word cut.

She described the basement.

Sophie’s birth.

Eleanor rationing food.

Harold visiting.

Adrian bringing paperwork.

When asked how she survived, Lila said, “I told my daughter the sky still existed.”

Eleanor rolled her eyes.

A juror saw it.

I saw the juror see it.

Good.

Nora testified about Tahoe.

Danielle about Napa.

A former security guard testified that Eleanor paid him to install locks “for unstable guests.”

A doctor admitted signing false mental health evaluations.

Harold testified against Eleanor and Adrian.

Eleanor stared at him with pure hatred.

He deserved it.

But not because he betrayed her.

Because he had betrayed every woman he used and every child he denied.
