Amazed

Chapter 6

The first press story called it the San Francisco Basement Scandal.

I hated the name.

It sounded like architecture.

Not a woman locked below my home.

Not a child born without sunlight.

Not a family that ate roast beef above suffering and called itself respectable.

Eleanor hired a crisis team.

Of course she did.

Their statement said Lila was a troubled former employee.

Sophie was “safe family kin.”

I read those words and almost threw my phone across the room.

Kin.

They would not say daughter.

Harold denied being Sophie’s father.

DNA ended that lie in forty-eight hours.

Sophie was his child.

Lila had recordings too.

Tiny files hidden in a cracked music player Maya had once given her.

Eleanor’s voice.

“If you behave, your daughter eats better.”

Harold’s voice.

“She looks like me. Keep her away from cameras.”

Adrian’s voice.

“Claire travels next week. Move the supplies through her account.”

I listened once.

Only once.

Then I sat on the hospital floor and shook until Rebecca found me.

“You don’t have to hear more,” she said.

“Yes, I do.”

“No. Evidence can speak without hurting you again.”

I let her take the headphones.

That was the first kind thing I allowed myself.

Maya came in later.

“Lila wants to see you.”

I went.

Lila looked fragile, but her eyes were sharp.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I almost cried.

“For what?”

“For being in your house.”

I took her hand.

“No. I’m sorry they used my house to hurt you.”

Sophie slept beside her.

Lila looked at her daughter.

“Will they take her?”

I leaned closer.

May you like

“No.”

For once, I made a promise I intended to keep with every dollar, lawyer, and breath I had.
