Amazed

Chapter 9

My divorce hearing was fast.

Adrian contested nothing after Rebecca presented the assault report, the recordings, the forgeries, and the protective order.

Still, he looked shocked when the judge granted exclusive ownership of the condo to me.

As if attacking me in my own dining room should have come with a property discount.

Outside court, he waited in handcuffs.

“Claire.”

I stopped because I wanted him to see my face.

The stitches were gone.

The scar was still red.

His eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.”

I studied him.

“Which part?”

“All of it.”

“No,” I said. “You’re sorry the basement opened.”

He flinched.

“You don’t know what it was like growing up with my mother.”

“You’re right.”

His face softened.

Then I finished.

“But I know what it was like being married to her son.”

The deputy led him away.

I felt nothing.

Then everything.

Rebecca caught me before my knees buckled.

Healing had bad timing.

The criminal case grew bigger.

Federal charges joined state charges.

Kidnapping.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Assault.

Witness intimidation.

Human trafficking.

Money laundering.

The media stopped calling it the basement scandal.

They started calling it the Bennett Network.

Good.

Let the family name carry the stain for once.

Nora was reunited with Eli after DNA and court review.

He was five and confused.

He called another woman Mom.

Nora did not force him.

She knelt and said, “You have many people who love you.”

That grace broke me.
