Amazed

Chapter 18

Two years passed.

The clinic became the Beneath the Surface Center.

Lila named it.

I thought it was too poetic.

She said survivors deserved poetry too.

Fair.

We expanded services.

Legal aid.

Emergency housing.

Medical exams.

Financial tracing.

Child therapy.

A hotline called Maya’s Line, because Maya insisted calls should be answered by someone who knows how much courage one sentence can take.

The first billboard read:

Tell them to check.

Calls tripled.

Some were false alarms.

Many were not.

Hidden rooms.

Locked sheds.

Controlled bank accounts.

Missing passports.

Families that smiled in public and punished in private.

I learned evil loves respectable addresses.

I also learned rescue loves preparation.

One evening, Rebecca brought me a file.

“Adrian is eligible to petition for sentence review in fifteen years.”

“Okay.”

“You’re calm.”

“I plan to still be free in fifteen years.”

She smiled.

“That’s my favorite legal strategy.”

I started dating again carefully.

A teacher named Miles.

Different Miles than the investigator.

Kind.

Patient.

Had no interest in my money.

The first time he came to my apartment, I said, “There is no basement.”

He did not laugh.

He said, “Good.”

That was when I knew he understood enough to learn the rest.

I introduced him to Maya first.

She interrogated him for two hours.

He passed with mild trauma.

Lila approved because Sophie liked his magic tricks.

I approved because he never once told me to stop being cautious.
