Amazed

Chapter 16

The Bennett assets were seized and redistributed.

It took lawyers, hearings, and more patience than any survivor should need.

Lila received restitution.

Nora too.

Danielle too.

Trusts were created for Sophie and Eli.

Harold’s denied children were legally recognized.

Eleanor’s three houses became shelters and recovery centers.

That part made me smile.

Her rooms, once full of locked doors and staged charity dinners, now held women with advocates, children with toys, and cameras installed for safety, not control.

Maya moved in with Lila for a while.

Not because Lila needed managing.

Because sisters sometimes need to learn how to share mornings again.

They fought.

Cried.

Cooked badly.

Watched old movies.

Sophie called Maya “Auntie Loud.”

Accurate.

One afternoon, Sophie asked me, “Did you live over my basement?”

The question hit hard.

I knelt.

“Yes.”

“Did you know I was there?”

“No.”

She studied me.

“Would you have helped?”

My throat closed.

“Yes. I would have torn the door down.”

She nodded seriously.

“Mommy says you helped after.”

“I tried.”

She touched my scar.

“Bad Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“Good Maya?”

“Very good Maya.”

Sophie smiled.

“Good Claire too.”

May you like

I cried in my car afterward for twenty minutes.

Sometimes healing comes from a child handing back a piece of yourself you thought was gone.
